Porthallow a potted version....

Porthallow was once a busy village with a thriving pilchard industry and it is still used today by some fishermen. Good fishing, safe bathing, sailing, cliff and coastal walks are all on the doorstep and the neighbouring traditional fishing villages of Coverack and Porthoustock are also within easy reach.
The beautiful surrounding area is one of great contrast: From the spectacular grandeur of the craggy coastline, dramatically swept by Atlantic rollers, to the still waters of tiny creeks and inlets leading to the Helford River. Some of the best cliff walks can be taken from Porthallow and on a clear day you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of Falmouth Bay and the Cornish coastline.
In addition to the magnificent coastal scenery and superb sea views of the Lizard Peninsula, there are many activities available in Porthallow and the Parish of St. Keverne. Throughout the summer there is something of interest for most people to enjoy and organised events such as carnivals, regattas, barbecues and fetes take place from May to October.
Porthallow has a beach cafe, public house, post office, tea shop, gift shops and even its own vineyard. The climate is usually milder here in South Cornwall than in the rest of the country which makes it ideal for a holiday from early Spring to late Autumn.

The Porthallow Village Association exists because in the 1970’s the village bought the beach from the Trelowarren estate.  A group of villagers invested the cost and became Trustees of both the beach and the institute to be maintained for the benefit and use of the village.  The building was used initially to cure pilchards.  Another room was added as a reading room.  For several years the building has been used for a variety of events such as parties, meetings, religious services and talks.  The Association is now a charity and due to the dilapidated state of the building the institute is now being rebuilt and due to open in September 2011.
